OUR STORY

Who we are

Cast in Stone is a family owned and operated business. We manufacture, supply and install specialised cement floor and wall coatings.

Where we started

The company was started in 2005, focusing on small construction projects and home improvements. By 2009, our interest in cementitious floor and wall coatings had intensified into a passion for developing superior products. Each product was tried and tested extensively on our own projects, and this resulted in the manufacturing side of the company being launched.

Over the years, we have seen the growing demand for innovative, cement flooring solutions; that are durable and easy to maintain. In recent years, the popularity and demand for these products have increased tremendously due to their aesthetic value, versatility and eco-friendliness.

Frequently asked questions

Are Concrete floors prone to cracking?

There is a high possibility that hairline cracks will appear in concrete screeded floors. Generally, people that like the look of screeded floors tend to feel that this adds to the character and overall effect of the floor. We always tell our clients that hairline cracks are a feature of these floors and that if they do not like that effect, it is best to go with another form of flooring.
There are other decorative finishes that can be applied over hairline cracks to minimise their effect on the eye, such as staining, stamping and stencilling.
Decorative concrete flooring is only as stable as the screed/slab that it is applied to. We always recommend a 25 Mpa screed.

Can the floor be applied over tiles?

We are able to apply the floor over existing ceramic tiles, provided there is no lifting of the tiles. It is not recommended to apply floors over natural tiles such as sandstone or terracotta.

Can the products be applied in showers?

The products are suitable for use in showers on walls and floors.

Can Underfloor heating be used with the floors?

Screed overlay floors can be applied over underfloor heating. This takes advantage of the ability of concrete to store and radiate heat. Please note that the underfloor heating should cover a minimum of 90% of the floor. Underfloor heating should be heated up gradually over a few days to prevent cracking which can be caused by extreme temperature changes.

Are Decorative Concrete Floors Expensive?

When compared with high-end floor coverings, such as ceramic tile, slate and marble, decorative concrete is often an economical alternative. Skilled concrete artisans can also create varied styles on the floors, making concrete floors an incredible palette for decoration. The life expectancy of concrete floors far surpass that of low to mid priced floor coverings such as carpeting, vinyl and wood laminates.

Are Decorative Concrete Floors Easy to Maintain?

Concrete floors are relatively easy to maintain, compared with other floor surfaces.
In most cases residential floors experience light foot traffic, and simple cleaning consisting of sweeping and damp mopping is sufficient to keep concrete floors in good condition. The maintenance requirements of a residential floor will be different to that of a floor in a high-traffic commercial or retail environment.
Floors are to be cleaned with soapy water using a mild detergent such as sunlight liquid. No harsh chemical products are to be used on the floors, such as Handy Andy, thinners, acetone etc.

Are concrete floors slippery?

As with other floors such as tiles, concrete floors can become slippery when wet. Applying a high-gloss sealer to protect and enhance decorative concrete may also increase the chances of floors becoming slippery when wet. This can, however, be easily remedied by mixing a slip-resistant additive into the stain or sealer before application.

Are concrete floors pet-friendly?

Few flooring materials are as pet-friendly as concrete. They resist pet odours and stains, once sealed. They are easy to clean. They won’t trap pet dander, fleas and mites. They are non-toxic. They are scratch resistant.

What colours are available?

We have a range of 12 Standard Colours.

How long does it take to apply the floor?

On average a project takes 4 days, but needs a few extra days for curing before furniture can be moved onto the floor.

How often does the floor need to be resealed?

We use a sealer, which is extremely hard wearing but not invulnerable to damage. Generally, reapplication of sealers should only be necessary every 5 years, however, this does differ depending on the level of use of the floor. Since we have been in business we have only ever had to reseal 2 floors out of the thousands of square metres applied.
